S Turns – Building Flow and Style

S turns are all about linking your carves smoothly and rhythmically. You’re not changing direction completely, just flowing rail to rail, controlling your foil through each arc. This is where you start to feel like you’re really riding, not just staying up. It’s a great way to build style and confidence at speed.

Foot Swap – Getting Comfortable Riding Switch

Being able to switch your feet on foil gives you better control and efficiency. At this stage, you’re learning to stay balanced while moving your feet mid-flight—without touching down. Start by practising in light wind with good speed, and don’t rush it. Eventually, it’ll become second nature and open up a lot more fluid riding.

Gybe – The First Real Turning Point

Once you’re comfortable riding in both directions, the gybe is your next step. You’ll be carving downwind, turning the board, and switching your wing to the new side. At first, aim to just stay flying through the turn—even if you don’t switch your feet. Focus on maintaining speed and smooth control.

Tack – The Upwind Transition

Tacking is more technical—it’s turning upwind and through the eye of the wind while staying on foil. It requires tight timing and wing handling to avoid stalling. Expect to work on quick, snappy movements with both your board and your wing. Once you’ve got it, it’s incredibly satisfying and opens up full upwind-downwind freedom.

Duck Gybe – Flow Meets Flair

The duck gybe is a stylish variation where you swing the wing forward and under your front arm during the turn. It looks great but takes precise timing. You’ll need to commit to the carve and have the confidence to let the wing pass through without pulling you off balance. A real crowd-pleaser once it clicks.

Heineken Gybe – One-Handed with Confidence

This one’s all about feel and trust. You’ll carve hard downwind while letting go with your back hand, holding the wing with just your front hand and spinning it over your head. It forces you to ride more by feel and foil control than wing input. A great way to show mastery—and it looks super clean.

360 – The Full Spin

The 360 is exactly what it sounds like: carving a full circle while staying on foil. It requires tight control and good use of the wing to maintain lift and momentum. You’ll learn a lot about where your power comes from and how to keep everything working in harmony through dynamic motion.

Flagged Out Pumping – Riding Without Power

Now you’re letting go of the wing or completely depowering it, and riding swell or generating speed through board and foil movement. This is where surf-style wingfoiling really begins. It’s tough at first, but incredibly rewarding. You’re using the foil, not the wing, to stay flying.

Back Wing – Going Reverse

This is more of an exploration stage—experimenting with riding with the wing on the upwind side, switching stance, or even trying blind or reverse riding positions. It builds your spatial awareness, balance, and ability to ride by feel rather than strict positioning.
