Wallasey Beach Kitesurf Spot Guide
A wide, sandy beach next to New Brighton on the north Wirral coast, with a shallow lagoon at low tide — where Northern Kites runs all its kitesurf lessons.
Why we teach kitesurfing at Wallasey Beach
Wallasey Beach runs along Coastal Drive between New Brighton and Leasowe, facing the Irish Sea at the mouth of the Mersey. At low tide the sand stretches hundreds of metres out, and a large, shallow lagoon forms between sandbars — ideal for learning to body drag, water start and ride your first runs.
Northern Kites is the licensed kitesurfing lesson provider on the beach and works from Wallasey Beach Club on Coastal Drive.
- Lots of space to launch, land and practise away from other beach users.
- Flat water with small waves in the lagoon and on most days at low to mid tide.
- Clean sea wind from the prevailing westerly and north-westerly directions.
- Proper facilities at the beach club: changing rooms, showers, toilets and a café-bar.
Wind directions
- North-west: onshore — good for learning, with the wind pushing you back to the beach.
- North: cross-onshore — the classic learning direction.
- West to west-south-west: cross-shore. As it swings towards south-west it can get gusty or fail to fill in.
- North-east: cross-shore.
- East and south: offshore or gusty — not used for lessons.
Tides
The tide decides almost everything at Wallasey, which is why lessons are booked around it rather than at fixed times.
- Low tide is best — the lagoon is at its biggest, especially on neap tides.
- Low to mid tide on the flood is also good riding.
- Avoid about two hours either side of high tide, when there's little beach left and the water gets choppy, especially on spring tides.
- On big spring tides the water can be a 15–20 minute walk out at low tide.
Hazards and beach rules
- The groyne: at high tide it's surrounded by water and usually downwind. Stay at least 200 m upwind — currents near it are strong.
- Wreck: a shipwreck lies about 1 km offshore and is only exposed at low spring tides.
- Summer swim zone: in season, a lifeguarded swim area runs about an hour either side of high tide. Never kite inside the red and white flags, and keep 200 m offshore when passing.
