What's the Best Age to Start Kitesurfing?

· Adam Crouch

Short answer: there's no single best age. At Northern Kites we teach kitesurfing to students aged 14 and up, and there's no upper age limit — we regularly teach beginners in their 40s, 50s and 60s. Your weight, confidence in the water and willingness to listen matter far more than your age.

Why we start at 14

A kite generates real power, even in light wind. Younger teenagers can find it hard to hold a kite down and stay in control, especially if they're light. From around 14, most students are strong and mature enough to learn safely on a full-size kite. Under-18s need a parent or guardian to book and consent.

Younger kids keen to get on the water can start with pumpfoiling or wingsurfing on West Kirby Marine Lake, where the water is flat and shallow. Get in touch and we'll advise on what suits them.

What matters more than age

  • Weight: lighter riders get pulled around more by the kite. We size kites and boards to each student, but very light riders need lighter wind days.
  • Water confidence: you'll fall in a lot. You need to be able to swim and be comfortable with your face in the water.
  • Listening and patience: kitesurfing is a technique sport. People who follow the steps progress fastest, whatever their age.
  • Fitness: a normal level of fitness is enough. The harness takes the kite's pull, not your arms.

Starting kitesurfing in your 40s, 50s or 60s

Plenty of our students start later in life, and they often progress faster than younger riders because they're patient and listen carefully. Lessons start on the beach with a small trainer kite, so you build control before any power is involved. Read Rachael's story for one student's experience.

Is wingfoiling easier for older beginners?

Wingfoiling can be gentler on the body, because the wing isn't attached to you and letting go stops the power. It's a popular choice for people who prefer a slower start. Read wing foiling vs kitesurfing to compare them.

Whatever your age, the best place to start is a Kitesurf Intro Day at Wallasey Beach.
