Why Chester riders learn at Wallasey Beach
Chester is one of the best-placed cities in the North West for kitesurfing: the M53 runs from the edge of the city to within a few minutes of Wallasey Beach, so getting to the sea takes about as long as crossing Manchester.
The Dee estuary on Chester's doorstep looks tempting, but its mudflats, channels and fast tides make it a poor place to learn. Wallasey Beach, on the open north coast of the Wirral, is the opposite:
- Firm sand and a shallow lagoon at low tide — ideal for your first water starts.
- Clean onshore and cross-shore winds from the north-west through west, the most common directions on this coast.
- Short enough to go after work. On long summer evenings, Chester students often fit in a session after a day in the office.
- A licensed operator on the beach, working from Wallasey Beach Club with changing rooms, showers and a café.
Being this close also makes it easy to keep progressing after your Intro Day. Many Chester riders book a few 1:1 sessions over a season, then join the local community riding at Wallasey once they're independent.

Most beginners start with the Intro Day, then carry on with 1:1 or two-person lessons.

4–5 hours, max 2 people. Beach skills with trainer kites, then your first water session.
Getting to Wallasey Beach from Chester
- By car: around 35 minutes (about 22 miles) — M53 north all the way to junction 1, then follow signs for New Brighton onto Coastal Drive.
- Parking: free along Coastal Drive and Kings Parade, outside Wallasey Beach Club.
- By train: Merseyrail from Chester towards Liverpool, change at Hamilton Square for a New Brighton train and get off at Wallasey Grove Road (about an hour in total). The beach club is a 15-minute walk down Harrison Drive.
- Evenings: in summer, late-afternoon tides make after-work lessons possible — ask in the WhatsApp group.

Kitesurfing lessons near Chester – FAQ
Are there kitesurfing lessons in Chester?
There's no safe place to learn kitesurfing in Chester itself — the Dee estuary has mudflats and strong tides. Chester riders learn with us at Wallasey Beach on the Wirral, around 35 minutes up the M53.
Can I fit a lesson in after work from Chester?
Often, yes. Lessons follow the tide, and in late spring and summer there are regular late-afternoon and evening slots. At around 35 minutes away, Chester is close enough to get there after work.
Do I need any experience?
No. The Kitesurf Intro Day is designed for complete beginners and starts on the beach with trainer kites before moving into the water.
What equipment do I need?
All kitesurfing equipment is included, including wetsuits. Bring swimwear, a towel, snacks and water.
How does booking work?
Lessons depend on the tide and wind. Slots are loaded into the booking system around the tides and you book the one that suits you. We post wind updates and any open slots that haven't been booked in our WhatsApp group, and you can check the forecast on our lesson pages.
What happens if the wind isn't right?
Safety comes first. If conditions aren't suitable, your lesson is moved to the next good day at no extra cost.
