Kitesurfing Lessons in the North West: Prices and What's Included

· Adam Crouch

Short answer: at Northern Kites a first kitesurf lesson, the Intro Day, costs £199 per person for 4–5 hours with all equipment included. Private 2-hour lessons are £149 after that. Most beginners need around 10–15 hours of lessons in total to ride independently, so budget for a course rather than a single session.

How many lessons do you need?

It varies from person to person, but a typical path looks like this:

  1. Intro Day (4–5 hours): kite control on the beach with a trainer kite, then your first time in the water with a full-size kite.
  2. Body dragging and water starts (2–6 hours): moving through the water with the kite and getting up on the board.
  3. Riding and staying upwind (4–6 hours): riding in both directions and getting back to where you started.

That's roughly 10–15 hours of lessons. The Zero to Hero packages bundle these together for less than booking each lesson separately.

What makes lesson prices vary?

  • Group size: private and two-person lessons cost more per hour than bigger groups but give you far more time flying the kite. We cap Intro Days at two people for that reason.
  • Location: a wide, shallow beach like Wallasey lets you learn faster than a steep or crowded one, so you need fewer hours overall.
  • Booking around the forecast: lessons booked to the wind mean less time sitting on the beach waiting for it.
  • Accreditation: BKSA-recognised schools follow a structured syllabus and give you a record of your progress that other schools recognise.

Is it cheaper to learn abroad?

Holiday lessons can be good value, but you lose days to the wrong wind and then need refresher lessons back home. Learning locally means you're ready to ride your home beach. If you do fancy a trip, our sister brand Northern Progression runs coached kitesurf holidays.
